We took a tour of North West Vietnam with our guide Hi and driver An. |
Guys fishing in the water outlet of a massive Soviet hydro dam. |
A rickety bridge across a big river to an ethnic minority village. |
We stopped in the middle of nowhere to check out this cave. |

It was pitch black inside. |
As we went in, local kids grabbed our hands and guided us, knowing the cave precisely even though we couldn't see a thing. |
A group of women, without lights, came through carrying stuff after us. Apparently the cave goes through the mountain to a village on the other side. |
After their guidance we rewarded the kids to a game of frisbee. |

I don't think they'd ever seen a frisbee before. |
But they gave it a go. |
Then we left the frisbee with them when we left, resulting in a mad dash to claim it. |
The beautiful countryside. |

Most people living outside the big cities can't afford government power. |
So they make their own with small-scale hydroelectricity. |
We saw this kind of setup everywhere. |
A market in the North West. |

While stopped to take a picture we heard a whirring and squealing. A guy riding his motorbike down the hill, engine off to save petrol, with a pig strapped to the back. |
Another dubious bridge, though we saw someone ride a motorbike across it. |
A Thai village. The Thai are another ethnic minority. |
Coming out of the hot, dry North West into the mountains on the worst road in Vietnam. |

This waterfall is on the mountain that divides the hottest, dryest region of Vietnam with the coldest, Sapa. |
